Wired or wireless: how to choose your scanner?
A cable is not always a limitation and a battery not always freedom — here is how to decide based on how you actually work.
The wired scanner: simple and unstoppable
A wired USB scanner has no battery to charge, never drops its connection and costs less. For a fixed checkout where the product comes to the scanner, a 1.5–2 metre cable is entirely sufficient — and the device works all day with zero extra care.
The wireless scanner: freedom of movement
Wireless scanners (2.4GHz with a USB base, or Bluetooth) let you go to the product: heavy items you cannot lift to the counter, shelf-by-shelf scanning during stocktakes, or goods-in at the warehouse door. Modern batteries last a full shift, and many models store codes in memory when you step out of range.
The questions that settle it
- Does the scanner move, or the product? Product comes to you → wired. You go to the product → wireless.
- How far from the computer do you work? Within 2 metres → the cable wins. Down warehouse aisles → wireless.
- Who looks after charging? In multi-shift environments, a wired scanner needs no charging discipline.
