How to choose a label printer?
Printers 1 min read
Five questions that choose the label printer before you look at the price: width, volume, method, connection and software.

The short answer
Start from the label, not the printer: how wide it is, how many you print a day and how long it must last. Those three answers choose between a compact 2-inch, a 4-inch desktop and an industrial printer.
The decision table
| Need | Class | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Narrow labels (shelf prices, small barcodes) | Compact 2-inch | SLP-DX220 — 15–60 mm labels |
| Product and shipping labels, medium volume | 4-inch desktop | XD5-40 — 15–118 mm labels |
| Labels that must last, medium volume | Thermal-transfer desktop | SLP-TX420 or XD5-40t |
| Warehouse, logistics, production, high volume | Industrial | XT5-40 — up to 356 mm/s, rolls up to 203 mm |
| Labels at the shelf or in the field | Mobile | SPP-R200III |
The five questions
- Width: the printer must take the widest label you use.
- Volume: industrial printers take bigger rolls and ribbons — fewer stops to change media.
- Method: direct thermal or thermal transfer — see our guide on the two.
- Connection: USB for one PC; Ethernet or Wi-Fi when several workstations share the printer.
- Software: Bixolon printers emulate ZPL II and EPL, so they often replace existing printers with no software change.
All models: label printers and mobile printers.
Mistakes we see most often
- A small desktop printer for industrial volume — frequent stops to change rolls.
- Choosing the printer before the label — and then the label does not fit.
- A no-name printer without standard emulation — the existing software does not recognize it.
