Can a barcode scanner read a QR code from a phone?
Scanners 1 min read
Coupons, tickets and loyalty cards increasingly live on phones. Here is which scanner reads them — and which does not.

The short answer
Yes — but only a 2D imaging scanner that states screen reading. 1D scanners cannot read QR codes at all, neither from paper nor from screens.
The quick table
| Scanner | QR on paper | QR on a screen |
|---|---|---|
| 1D | No | No |
| 2D with stated screen reading | Yes | Yes |
| No-name 2D, no spec | Usually yes | In our experience, often with difficulty |
Models whose manufacturer states screen reading
- Henex HC-3208 and H310 — wired handhelds.
- Henex H2200 — desktop scanner: the customer holds up the phone, no pickup needed.
See all: wired scanners and desktop scanners.
Scenarios
- A checkout with phone coupons and loyalty cards: a 2D desktop scanner — the customer places the phone in front of it.
- Ticket checks at an entrance: a wired 2D handheld, or wireless when the entrance is far from the computer.
When reading from a phone fails
- Screen brightness too low — turn it up.
- A cracked screen or a very reflective screen protector.
- A 1D scanner — no setting fixes it; it needs 2D.
